Happier Healthier Dogs
Everybody wants to have a healthy happy pet. Do you know how to create the right home environment for your dog? Here are a few products for the home that might make a difference for your little buddy.
Dog Beds - Where does your pet spend the most time sleeping? Do they curl up on a cold hard floor? blanket, towel or mat? do they sleep outside? or do you have them in a crate at night? No matter where your dog sleeps, there are ways for you to help make their sleep more comfortable. Dog beds come in all quality and price ranges. In order to decide which one is best for your dog, you need to consider the size, age and general health of your pet. Starting with size, your dog’s bed should be large enough to accommodate your pet in a full stretched out position from head to tail, with all arms and legs supported completely. The age and general health of your dog is also an important factor in choosing the right dog bed for it, because just like people, as dogs get older the joints, muscles and bones come under more stress and strain. Dogs develop arthritis, and other joint related problems due to the wear and tear of everyday life on four legs. There are specially designed orthopedic dog beds, created to support the body of your dog while sleeping giving them relief and comfortable sleep. If your dog is an outdoor dog, don’t bet that sleeping on the grass under a tree is the best sleep they can get. There are dog beds that made from water resistant materials that will provide much better body support and comfort than your lawn will.
Dog Crates and Mats – Dog crates are a great sleeping option for your pet. The important thing to keep in mind about the health of your dog in this environment is that the dog crate should be sized to fit your dog in a full stretch position. If you pet is not able to stretch out properly during sleep, it stands a much greater chance of having muscle and joint problems. Also be sure to get bumper cushions for your crate. Many dog mats come in either a set or full piece with side bumpers. The bumpers will keep your dog from pushing up on the cage walls during sleep and prevent any injury or discomfort that they can cause.
Dog Feeders – If given the option of eating without use of your hands on the floor –vs- eating off of a table. Would you swallow your food with your head and torso leaning down? Or would you rather be able to sit more upright and not have to strain your neck to reach your food? Hopefully you would choose to eat in an upright position, and so would your pet if they had the ability to tell you. There are elevated dog feeders on the market in different sizes and styles to suit your needs. Choose one set at a height that will allow your dog to walk up to it and eat without a significant raising or lowering of its head. This will keep your dog from straining to reach its food and put it in the proper position for swallowing.
